Land at Hosea Kutako International Airport, around 45 minutes from the city centre, collect your rental car, and overnight in Windhoek, the standard one-night bookend before the long drives start.

Drive to Sossusvlei (~5 hours via Rehoboth and Solitaire) for one sunrise session at Dune 45 and Deadvlei (shuttle from the 2x4 car park, since it's mandatory for that final stretch), and Sesriem Canyon in the cooler part of the day.

Drive to Swakopmund (~4–5 hours via Solitaire and the Kuiseb Pass) for two nights on the coast, one real activity (sandboarding or a Walvis Bay boat trip), and the best food on the route.

Damaraland (~3–4 hours from Swakopmund via Uis): Twyfelfontein's rock engravings, a genuine UNESCO World Heritage Site, on the first day; a guided drive tracking desert-adapted elephant on the second (sightings aren't guaranteed, but this is the best realistic chance in the country).

Is 10 days the right length for a first Namibia trip?
For most people, yes, it's the shortest itinerary that covers desert, coast and a proper wildlife stop without turning every day into a driving day. This is the route we'd recommend by default.
Should I rent a 4x4 for this itinerary?
Yes, worth it specifically because of Damaraland's gravel D-roads. A high-clearance 2x4 can manage, but a 4x4 is the more comfortable, lower-risk choice for that leg. Etosha, Sossusvlei and Swakopmund alone wouldn't require it.
Can I skip Damaraland to avoid the 4x4 upgrade?
Yes, drop back to the 7-day route's coverage and add a third Etosha night instead, or swap Damaraland for a second Swakopmund activity day. You'll lose the desert-adapted elephant and Twyfelfontein, which is a real trade-off, not a minor one.
How much total driving does the 10-day route involve?
Around 21 hours across five legs: roughly 5 hours to Sossusvlei, 4–5 hours on to Swakopmund, 3–4 hours to Damaraland, 4 hours to Etosha, and 4.5 hours back to Windhoek. That's just over 2 hours a day on average once it's spread across ten days, since each two-night stop leaves a full day with no driving at all.
